Baptism of FireThe Witcher #3Andrezej SapkowskiIt is a good and slow book but nothing really happened to add to the story, it felt more like a filler manga volume。I liked our merry band in this book searching for Ciri and seeing the baptism of fire。The vampire was awesome! I liked him the most!So the book is slow the ending is rushed hopefully we get somewhere in the next installment of the series。Maybe not the best of the series for me so far; still very good!

The treatment of women has not improved, and nor has the pacing issues his previous novels had。 This was definitely a chore to get through, and so dreadfully, achingly dull。

This volume had a bit more politics and war than I'd like, but I'm still big time in love with Geralt。 There was a good amount of Dandelion this time, but not enough Yen and Ciri。(Also the repeated mention of the phrase 'baptism of fire' got a bit tired。) This volume had a bit more politics and war than I'd like, but I'm still big time in love with Geralt。 There was a good amount of Dandelion this time, but not enough Yen and Ciri。(Also the repeated mention of the phrase 'baptism of fire' got a bit tired。) 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Five books in, and this series only continues to improve upon itself in every way。 This is a novel where the goal from the outset is flawed: Find Ciri。 Only。。。 as we know from the last book, Geralt thinks she's in a different place than she is。 It's a bold move to make your protagonist spend an entire novel searching for something that isn't there。 But that's not really what the novel is about。It would be accurate to call this book the slowest in the series, but this is hardly a detriment。 While Five books in, and this series only continues to improve upon itself in every way。 This is a novel where the goal from the outset is flawed: Find Ciri。 Only。。。 as we know from the last book, Geralt thinks she's in a different place than she is。 It's a bold move to make your protagonist spend an entire novel searching for something that isn't there。 But that's not really what the novel is about。It would be accurate to call this book the slowest in the series, but this is hardly a detriment。 While the previous novels had long periods of downtime, the vast majority of this book is dedicated towards Geralt and the building of his fellowship。 There's some action, but most of the novel is stuffed with character interactions, meditations on war, and the nuances of character relationships。 I absolutely love that kind of writing, and Geralt - an already fantastic, multi-faceted character - is developed immensely in this one。 The new cast members are nuanced and feel like living, breathing people, not tropes or stock characters。 The bond and cameraderie they develop while exploring the war torn - and extremely brutal - landscape is fresh and masterful。 That's another thing: the portrayal of war here is raw and gritty, and not at all glamorized。Cirilla and Yennefer are only briefly touched upon, but I think that's fine。 This novel was about Geralt's growth。 I imagine they'll get plenty of screentime in the following books。 I loved the new characters。 Milva was a badass, Regis was also fascinating。 Zoltan was one of the most intricate dwarven characters I've ever read。 Just a solid book。 。。。more

For the first 100 pages I really thought this was going to be a 3 star。 But I just can't help it, I really got hooked when Geralt's little rescue band formed。 Regis is one of my favorites, so I was excited to finally meet him! I also enjoyed the formation and meetings of the lodge of sorceresses。 I will say there are a lot of slow moments and So much political intrigue。 I definitely couldn't keep perfect track of it all, but enough that I'm interested。 I'm a little biased because I'm in love wit For the first 100 pages I really thought this was going to be a 3 star。 But I just can't help it, I really got hooked when Geralt's little rescue band formed。 Regis is one of my favorites, so I was excited to finally meet him! Intense。 In every chapter the reader can feel the tension。 Every time a new character comes around, I just felt mixed feelings, trying to figure if it would be a friend or an enemy。 Extremely focused on Gerald, “Baptism of Fire” take us to a chaotic war, with a lot of stimulus everywhere。

Paul

The party gathers and ventures forward。 Zoltan and Regis are amazing characters that you cannot help but like。 The writing style continues with the same both dark and humorous tone。 Sapkowski takes the reader deep into the Witcher universe and at times it can be overwhelming without pausing here and there to check who was this, who was that and so on。

We meet Regis, who comes with Geralt, Milva and dandelion on their journey。 Geralt and dandelion nearly get executed by the remains of the cintran army。 Ciri remains with the Rats。 Yen escapes the meeting of the lodge of scorceresses。

Ciri has taken up with the rats who are a surprisingly murderous group of teens。 Geralt and his new companions are searching for Ciri。 Yennefer has disappeared。 No one knows where she has gone。 Again this story is very different from the short stories of the Witcher that I originally read and loved。 While this book has a lot more action in it, there is still a lot of confusion as to what is going on。 The narrator constantly shifts as well as the point of views。 We still have the same POVs Ciri, Ciri has taken up with the rats who are a surprisingly murderous group of teens。 Geralt and his new companions are searching for Ciri。 Yennefer has disappeared。 No one knows where she has gone。 Again this story is very different from the short stories of the Witcher that I originally read and loved。 While this book has a lot more action in it, there is still a lot of confusion as to what is going on。 The narrator constantly shifts as well as the point of views。 We still have the same POVs Ciri, Geralt, and Yennefer。 Hovered at two separate times the narrator also changed one time it was random story teller telling a story to a bunch of children。 One time it was the Witcher telling his story to someone in the future…I find the constant changing of narrators and times to be really confusing。 It is hard to get a sense of when this whole thing is happening。 This book became more of a political satire than any of the previous ones。 The story below is in example:The story of the witch and the cat。 A preacher claims that a young orphan who cannot speak is a witch。 She has brewed a potion。 She cooked a cat alive in this potion。 The priest even showed proof of the cats bones in the potion。 Many of the villagers believed the priest。 They were told these were cats bones by someone famous/religious leaders so they completely whole heartedly believed that they were。 But the leader of the group did not believe。 The mayor knew the bones were bird bones not cat bones。 He refused to believe the lies told by the priest。 I find this to be a great political satire in this current day and age。 The amount of misinformation abounding around the Covid vaccine is like the priest trying to convince everyone the girl boiled a live cat。 Some people will believe whatever they are told despite the evidence clearly not supporting the false claim in the first place。 In general people are easily swayed by charismatic speakers。 Regardless if speaker is telling the truth or not。 Another political stand was a little section about abortion。 Ok now it is time for me to get controversial。 I get it that the whole world is at war。 However I do not get the constant obsession with rape during war。 I realize that it is naive of me but I believe that by continuing to perpetuate the coinciding of violence, war and rape in books, TV and movies; we are also perpetuating it in real life。 Much of human behavior is learned。 It is time to stop teaching people that violence, war and rape go together。 Rape is NEVER ok。 Not doing war。 Not during peace。 NEVER。 The age and sex of a person should not matter。 Rape on all levels is degrading, based, and emotionally damaging。 It is NEVER Ok。 That is what needs to be taught。A whole new troop of characters were added into this novel。 Many of these dwarves just blended together。 I know there were several of them but the reader really only gets to know the leader well。 The archer and the healer are probably two of the most interesting characters so far。 I am really disappointed with Ciri’s story though。 Every time we see her she is either being abused or is being excessively violent。 I find it a really unflattering gay relationship because Ciri is always acting disgusted or forced into her relationship with Whistle。R - While this book isn’t excessive in any one area, there is so much going on that is constant that it just seems to be full of bad language, violence, adult subject matter like rape, abortion, war, and sex。 。。。more

By far my favourite Witcher book。 Sure, some might say it's boring, because all that happens is the witcher walking or riding through war riden lands, but if I'm being honest, I love how slow it was compared to the previous book。 I also thoroughly enjoyed the cast of characters。 The witcher's convoy consists of obviously the constantly grumpy witcher, Jaskier, the bard who for ever loving fuck never knows when to shut up, Milva, the very talented and snarky bow mistress, Cahir, a nilfgardiam who By far my favourite Witcher book。 Sure, some might say it's boring, because all that happens is the witcher walking or riding through war riden lands, but if I'm being honest, I love how slow it was compared to the previous book。 I also thoroughly enjoyed the cast of characters。 The witcher's convoy consists of obviously the constantly grumpy witcher, Jaskier, the bard who for ever loving fuck never knows when to shut up, Milva, the very talented and snarky bow mistress, Cahir, a nilfgardiam who isn't a nilfgardian, I swear, an alchemist who is creepy but also the nicest person ever and a bunch of fun and gwent loving dwarves, who cannot fathom that pissing and farting in front of ladies isn't the nicest thing to do。 All in all, a lovely bunch, that made this book a warm and hilarious read。 。。。more
